Bikeshare Fast Facts
- By 2016, North America had 50,000 bikeshare bikes, compared to 40,000 in 2014, and only 20,000 in 2012.
- 28 million bikeshare trips were taken in 2016. This is a 25 percent increase in ridership from 2015.
- As of 2017, more than 130 North American cities use bikeshare.
- More than 12 North American cities have been piloting “dockless” bikeshare technology.
- Bikeshare helps solve the “first and last mile problems” associated with bus and rail public transit — the ubiquitous situation in which the final destination for travelers is located a mile or two from a bus or rail station, hindering the usability of bus/rail transit for many people.
- A 2015 study by Virginia Tech on Capital Bikeshare found that 16% of riders interviewed reported new spending due to their use of public bikeshare.
