Shared Mobility Data
Shared Mobility Data
Shared micromobility is part of the public transportation ecosystem. Operators, cities, researchers and other transportation and mobility stakeholders use mobility data to plan, optimize, and grow transportation networks.
t
Privacy Principles for Mobility Data
Developed through a collaboration of more than 20 cities, mobility service providers, technology companies, privacy advocates, and academics, the Privacy Principles for Mobility Data are intended to serve as a guiding “North Star” to assess technical and policy decisions that have implications for privacy when handling mobility data. The collaborative, which was convened by NABSA, NUMO, and OMF in 2020, consulted privacy experts, discussed key topics related to data privacy, and identified core ideas and common themes to serve as a basis for these principles.
t
General Bikeshare Feed Specification (GBFS)
Under NABSA’s leadership, the General Bikeshare Feed Specification (GBFS) Version 1 was developed by a team of bikeshare system owners and operators, application developers, and technology vendors and launched in 2015.
In 2019, NABSA selected MobilityData to become the technical steward for the GBFS community, which involved improving the specification and its governance to meet evolving industry needs.
In 2022, in the interest of supporting the evolution of the GBFS specification, NABSA transferred ownership of GBFS to MobilityData. Through a three-year partnership between the two organizations, it became clear that MobilityData, being the industry leader in the governance and expansion of mobility data specifications (such as the GTFS specification for public transit), is the right stakeholder to host the repository moving forward.
Find resources about GBFS and engage with the GBFS specification and community at the below links.

t
Data Collection and Metrics Standardization
NABSA’s industry survey that is used to collect information for the annual Shared Micromobility State of the Industry Report is an international benchmark for shared micromobility. Understanding user attitudes, needs, behavior and uptake is an important component of our benchmarks and learnings. Based on our work developing the annual report, we have created recommendations for good practices to standardize user survey questions to derive more robust shared micromobility metrics.

About NABSA
The North American Bikeshare & Scootershare Association (NABSA) collaborates across sectors to grow shared micromobility and its benefits to communities, creating a more equitable and sustainable transportation ecosystem. NABSA is the industry’s membership organization with representation from system owners, operators, host cities, equipment manufacturers, and technology and service providers.
Founded in 2014, NABSA is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to providing resources, education, and advocacy for the shared micromobility industry, and to creating spaces for the industry’s public, private, and nonprofit sectors to convene and empower each other.
About Shared Micromobility
Shared Micromobility has proven to be an affordable, efficient, healthy, and sustainable form of public transportation used mostly for short trips; it is a tool that can be leveraged to build more equitable, environmentally sustainable, resilient transportation ecosystems. Communities big and small adopt shared micromobility to provide low-cost transportation, reduce transportation-related emissions, improve air quality, reduce traffic congestion, stimulate economic development, provide an accessible means for physical activity, and increase access to public transit by completing transit networks and resolving the ‘first and last mile’ problem. Shared micromobility systems are currently operating in at least 401 cities in the US, Canada, and Mexico.
NABSA produces the annual Shared Micromobility State of the Industry Report, the first report capturing in-depth metrics and trends about shared micromobility across North America.
Core Values
NABSA has five core values that guide NABSA, our members, and the shared micromobility industry. Our core values are woven into NABSA’s priorities and the work we do on behalf of the industry. At NABSA, we value Safety, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, Integrity, Health, and Sustainability.

Why is being a board member of NABSA important to you?
I’m a founding member of NABSA. And it’s been my privilege to work in this industry from both the public and private side for the last eight years. Our young industry is at a tipping point. It’s incredibly important that we move forward with thoughtful action that is both progressive and conservative. My experience and passion for this industry is profound. I want to serve on this board to help our industry get bigger and better without losing track of why we started working in bike share to begin with.
What experience or insight do you bring to your position on the board?
For the last eight years I’ve had the opportunity to work in a variety of roles in the bike sharing space for both the public and private sector including:
-
- Researching bike share for our city
-
- Writing the RFP for our city
-
- Vendor selection
-
- Board member recruitment & selection
-
- Fundraising & financial management
-
- Procurement & deployment
-
- Branding
-
- Communications & media relations
-
- Staff management
- Strategic planning & data analysis
As the Founder & Executive Director of Salt Lake City’s non-profit bike share (GREENbike) I’ve secured $14M in private sponsorships and public grants in the 124th largest market in the country. I’ve expanded our organization by more than 400% since we launched. We’ve secured funding for expansions every year through 2024. We’ve built up operational cash reserves. Every bike has been ridden multiple times a day, every day, since we’ve launched. And I’ve only lost one full-time employee in nearly seven years.
I’ve taken an organization from conception to expansion. I know what it takes to keep an organization healthy and sustainable. And it’s more than talking points. It requires thoughtful analysis, planning and action. As a NABSA board member in the non-profit category, I would bring an expertise and understanding that would represent non-profit bike shares from across the country. I’ve been lucky enough to cultivate friendships with many of my non-profit and for-profit peers. And as we know, this industry is about relationships. I am grateful for the opportunity to help guide our nascent industry as a NABSA board member as bike sharing enters a new chapter.

Why is being a board member of NABSA important to you?
As Executive Director of Detroit’s non-profit bikeshare system, I want to contribute my skills and knowledge to this great national organization.
What experience or insight do you bring to your position on the board?
My skills include running a non-profit organization and serving as that non-profit’s marketing and community outreach director. As a person of color, I believe my perspective is a great addition to NABSA’s Board.

Why is being a board member of NABSA important to you?
In Oregon, the transportation sector is the leading source of greenhouse gas emissions. Bike share helps people to drive less while making city life more convenient and fun. Serving on the board allows me to help encourage bike share innovation and help us share best practices. I have learned so much from my board and industry peers. When I think about the compliments I’ve received about BIKETOWN, they nearly all tie directly back to NABSA.
What experience or insight do you bring to your position on the board?
I bring over a decade of experience working in behavior change and twenty years in public policy. I like to solve problems and be ambitious. I am very excited for Portland to host NABSA’s 2018 conference and I’m committed to making it our best conference ever.
Steve Hoyt-McBeth - Board Member

Steve Hoyt-McBeth
Portland Bureau of Transportation
Why is being a board member of NABSA important to you?
NABSA is our industry’s convener, advocate and educator. We need a strong and vibrant NABSA to increase government investment, address our industry’s pressing problems, and keep our nonprofit, private and government in dialogue and partnership.
I want to continue bringing more value to our members and industry through my board service, and especially by bringing new resources to NABSA. I promise to continue to dedicate myself as a board and committee member to finding more financial resources and innovative solutions.
What experience or insight do you bring to your position on the board?
For the past seven years, I have served in a number of roles to support NABSA’s growth. I currently chair the Development (fundraising) Committee, and previously served as President, Secretary, Research and Data Chair.
In my day job, I manage Portland’s bike share program (BIKETOWN) and transportation demand management programs, along with supervising eight staff at the Portland Bureau of Transportation. In addition, I oversee Adaptive BIKETOWN, the first adaptive bike rental service focused on people with disabilities to be co-branded with a bike share service.

Why is being a board member of NABSA important to you?
Bikesharing is a young, relatively small, and quickly evolving industry. We need to share knowledge and best practices and maintain professional and ethical business standards such that the bikeshare movement can continue to prosper and facilitate more people riding bikes. NABSA plays a vital role in bringing together the industry’s various sectors by providing a forum for open and informed discourse. As a Board Member, I am committed to NABSA being the convening body and resource expert in providing education and opportunities for business enhancement and growth to all players in the industry.
What experience or insight do you bring to your position on the board?
As bikeshare continues to prove its effectiveness as a complementary mode of transit, it has become an expectation in mid-large sized cities. As technology evolves and the cost of implementation decreases, one of the next frontiers for bikeshare is smaller communities. I am honored to be the NABSA voice of, and advocate for, these smaller jurisdictions and programs. I hope that my experience as the founder and operator a regional bikeshare system in communities of under 3,000 people can be valuable resource to other communities to implement and effectively manage bikeshare systems. Bikeshare is not a one size fits all approach and each system must be designed to resonate within the needs and goals and resources of the community.

Why is being a board member of NABSA important to you?
Since 2010, bike sharing has helped transform communities of all sizes here in North America. With over 100 systems on the ground today and operating within a variety of business models, I strongly believe that NABSA is strategically positioned to help support, shape and lead the future of bike share in North America. I am honored to be a part of this organization.
What experience or insight do you bring to your position on the board?
Having been a part of the BCycle organization since 2009, I have had a “front seat” in being a part of the growth of bike share in North America. My role has taken me to both big cities and small communities and provided me with a unique insight in common traits yet unique components that make up our home towns. I believe that this broad perspective provides me with an excellent record of experience that I am happy to leverage on behalf of the entire NABSA membership.
