Member Spotlight: Cascadia Mobility
Cascadia Mobility is a nonprofit shared and active transportation service provider in Eugene & Springfield, Oregon and the operator of the region’s “PeaceHealth Rides” bikeshare program. Cascadia Mobility was formed in 2021, with the idea that shared and active transportation should be operated to benefit people and communities, just like traditional public transit. Through local partnerships, municipal and institutional support, and a public benefit mandate, Cascadia Mobility is building a “two wheel transit agency” model in Eugene that hopes to serve as a model for other cities in Oregon or nationally.
Cascadia Mobility was founded by Brodie Hylton who grew his shared mobility expertise with some of the early large-scale bikeshare programs in the US with companies that include Alta Bicycle Share (now Motivate), Bicycle Transit Systems, and Social Bicycles (acquired by Uber). Cascadia Mobility has since expanded its bike & scooter share operations scope to include active transportation event, education, and encouragement programming. The professional operating nonprofit model has positioned Cascadia Mobility to fill other active transportation needs in the community, with bikeshare operations serving as the foundation.
Cascadia Mobility has been awarded grants from Oregon DOT, Oregon Health Authority, and the local transit agency to name a few, underscoring the public value of bikeshare and active transportation. Looking to 2025, Cascadia Mobility expects to begin work with the local transit agency, LTD, to electrify, expand and integrate the bikeshare program with LTD’s transit services. Cascadia Mobility has also just been awarded a grant to teach kids the skills and confidence needed to safely travel independently by bike and bus. As their community’s political and transportation leaders lean into bike and “slow lane” infrastructure additions, Cascadia Mobility aims to serve as a critical cog, helping to build the active transportation culture. Notably, 2024 was the highest year of bikeshare ridership ever, since the program’s original launch, in 2018, with over 200,000 trips on an active fleet of about 400 legacy non-electric Social Bicycles.
When asked about the value of NABSA membership they said that NABSA provides an important connection for Cascadia Mobility to the broader shared mobility community. “Information sharing and networking allow Cascadia Mobility to stay current on industry best practices & strategies, equipment & software providers, and a community of helpful, knowledgeable professionals that share our passion in making our communities healthier in every way by making not driving the easy choice. The annual conference in particular is an incredible opportunity to learn and get connected. At a policy level, NABSA can help policy makers and elected leaders understand how shared mobility, particularly when integrated with transit, can help improve community health, accessibility, and economics. For all these reasons, Cascadia Mobility is proud to be a NABSA member!”, said founder and Executive Director, Brodie Hylton.
