Shared Micromobility Continues to be On the Rise

2025 was the third record-setting year in a row for shared micromobility trips.

  • Today, NABSA releases the seventh annual Shared Micromobility State of the Industry Report for North America – the only report of its kind tracking the trends, growth, and success of shared micromobility across North America.
  • At least 237 million shared micromobility trips were taken in 2025, 5% more than in 2024, which makes 2025 the third record-setting year in a row for shared micromobility trips.
  • At least 403 cities of all sizes across North America had one or more shared micromobility system in 2025.
  • 70% of riders report using shared micromobility to connect to transit.
  • Shared micromobility offset approximately 109 million pounds (50 million kg) of CO₂ emissions by replacing auto trips across North America in 2025, and 513 million pounds (233 million kg) of CO₂ emissions since 2019.

August 6, 2026 – Today, the North American Bikeshare and Scootershare Association (NABSA), the nonprofit membership-based association representing public, private, and nonprofit organizations in shared micromobility, celebrates the release of the seventh annual Shared Micromobility State of the Industry Report for North America

The 2025 State of the Industry Report demonstrates that shared micromobility continued its stable, sustained growth, reflecting a maturing transportation option hitting its stride. In 2025, at least 237 million trips were taken on approximately 350,000 shared micromobility vehicles across North America. This is a 5% increase in ridership to that of 2024, making 2025 the third record-setting year in a row. This shows that shared micromobility continues to serve riders reliably, connect people to transit and destinations, and grow where demand and support align. In 2025, at least 403 cities in North America had a shared bike or scooter system.

“People rely on shared micromobility in their communities to get to where they need to go,” said NABSA Executive Director Sam Herr. “Having options for people to choose the best way to get around for what they need to do is essential, and this report makes clear that bikeshare and scootershare systems are part of that everyday choice for many many people.”

The average ride length on shared micromobility is 1.5 miles, or 2.4 kilometers. Seventy percent of riders say that they use shared micromobility to connect to transit.

Shared micromobility has additional benefits, like offering a means of physical activity. In 2025, North Americans generated 50 million hours of physical activity through riding shared micromobility. By replacing motor vehicle trips, shared micromobility also reduces transportation-related emissions. In 2025, shared micromobility across North America offset approximately 109 million pounds (50 million kg) of CO₂ emissions by replacing car trips– 513 million lbs (229 million kg) of CO₂ emissions since 2019.

“It’s imperative that we continue to invest in this form of transportation, as well as safe places for people to ride it, so that communities can continue to thrive,” says Herr. NABSA works toward federal policy priorities in the US and Canada to help do this, including working with US legislators to introduce the Shared Micromobility Investment Act and submitting a pre-budget brief Government of Canada advocating for dedicated shared micromobility funding.

NABSA worked with Toole Design and the University of California Berkeley Transportation Sustainability Research Center to help develop the report. The report is composed of survey results, statistics gathered from performance reports released by shared micromobility systems, and data from GBFS. Both an English and Spanish version of the report is available for download at nabsa.net/industry.

In addition to the annual Shared Micromobility State of the Industry Report, NABSA has a new podcast series, City Share, that explores what it’s like to ride shared micromobility in different cities, and convenes an Annual Conference. The NABSA Annual Conference is the only shared micromobility-focused conference globally, and brings together shared mobility leaders, practitioners, operators, and equipment and technology providers to actively shape the future of shared micromobility. This year’s conference will be held October 6-8 in Cincinnati, Ohio. More information about the conference and registration can be found at nabsa.net/conference/2026conference/.
