Webinar Recap: NABSA Provides Insight Into the 2021 Shared Micromobility State of the Industry Report

On August 16th, NABSA held a public webinar taking a deeper dive into NABSA’s third annual Shared Micromobility State of the Industry Report – the only report of its kind tracking the trends, growth, and success of shared micromobility across North America. NABSA was joined by project partners Toole Design and UC Berkeley’s Transportation Sustainability Research Center (TSRC). The presentation covered shared micromobility’s highlights from 2021, new information included in the report, and the methodology used to develop the metrics included in the report.

Speakers:

  • Sam Herr, NABSA
  • Adrian Witte, PE – Toole Design
  • Elliot Martin, Ph.D. – UC Berkeley TSRC
  • Susan Shaheen, Ph.D. – UC Berkeley Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and TSRC

Key take-aways from the event include:

  • Shared micromobility is coming out of the pandemic better than it went in, with at least 298 systems and 232,000 vehicles in operation in 2021 – both higher than 2019 pre-pandemic numbers.
  • Electric shared micromobility is trending upward. Scooters were 57% of the total number of shared micromobility vehicles in operation across North America. 50% of bikeshare systems now include e-bikes, and e-bikes are ridden approximately 36% more than regular pedal bikes.
  • More people used shared micromobility to connect to transit in 2021. 63% of riders stated that they use shared micromobility to connect to transit, and 18% of all shared micromobility trips taken were for the purpose of connecting to transit, an increase of 13% and 2% respectively from 2020.
  • The 2021 State of the Industry Report includes new policy information and expanded the transit integration section.
  • There has been a year-over-year increase in the number of respondents to the operator and agency surveys, which provide the foundation for the metrics contained in the report.

Agencies and operators interested in contributing data to the report can do so by responding to the annual survey sent out in the early part of each year. If you are an agency or operator of shared micromobility and have not received a survey in the past, please contact hello@nabsa.net to request to be added to our outreach list.
