A Look Back at the Last 4 Years
NABSA is excited to release the 2023 Shared Micromobility State of the Industry Report for North America on Tuesday August 6th at 2pm ET with our virtual launch event. This event will mark the fifth annual release of the Shared Micromobility State of the Industry Report for North America – the only report of its kind for shared micromobility. The annual State of the Industry report shares year-over-year metrics demonstrating the industry trends, growth, and success in shared micromobility for Canada, the US, and Mexico.
The inaugural report was released in 2020 and looked at data from 2019. The release marked the first time that the shared micromobility industry had in-depth, year-over-year metrics demonstrating its trends, growth, and success in North America, and established benchline data. The second report, which looked at 2020 data, highlighted the industry’s response and resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic, in addition to country-by-country breakdowns of trip and vehicle numbers, mode shift, rider representation, economic impacts, and other metrics. The third report told the second half of the COVID-19 story of 2021. The fourth report showed that trip-making returned to pre-pandemic levels, and demonstrated the demand and interest in shared micromobility by capturing the rapid increase in the number of cities with shared micromobility, and further demonstrated the resilience, importance, and impact of shared micromobility in communities across North America.
The 2023 report continues to capture year-over-year metrics demonstrating the trends, growth, and success of shared micromobility in Canada, the US, and Mexico. The upcoming report will reflect a new stage of maturity for the industry. Climate, transportation equity, connections to transit, and financial sustainability continue to be key themes for the industry as electrification of shared micromobility devices and of operational vehicles expands. Resilience and Growth
Shared micromobility usage was affected during the early onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, but the industry quickly rebounded and was within 20% of 2019 levels by the end of 2020. This positive trajectory continued into 2021. By 2022, trip-making returned to pre-pandemic levels in North America, and there was a rapid increase in the number of cities with shared micromobility.
Climate Impacts
Riding shared micromobility helps to decarbonize transportation by producing considerably fewer greenhouse gas emissions than driving a gas-powered car. Shared micromobility trips in North America offset approximately 74 million pounds of CO₂ emissions in 2022, 54 million pounds of CO₂ emissions in 2021, 29 million pounds in 2020, and 65 million pounds in 2019 by replacing car trips.
Electric Shared Micromobility
The popularity of electric shared micromobility has grown significantly since it was introduced. NABSA found that 7 million trips were made across North America on e-bikes in 2019, 10 million in 2020, 19 million in 2021, and nearly 31 million in 2022. The percentage of systems that had e-bikes increased from 28% in 2019 to 44% in 2020, 50% in 2021, and 55% in 2022. Likewise, the percentage of systems that had e-scooters increased from 52% in 2019 to 58% in 2020, 64% in 2021, and 66% in 2022.
Transit Integration
Shared micromobility continues to help make public transportation more equitable and accessible by filling transit gaps, serving as a first/last-mile solution, and complementing transit service. In 2023 64% of riders reported that they use shared micromobility to connect to transit and 23% of all shared micromobility trips were for the purpose of connecting to transit.

New additions to the 2023 State of the Industry report include a focus on electrification trends in ridership and in operations, how operators are incorporating climate-friendly practices, a snapshot of emerging public agency financial support, a snapshot of the fees assessed for permit-based operations, and new research.
