Member Spotlight: Sound Transit
Formed in 1993, Sound Transit is a public transit agency that operates regional transit service throughout Central Puget Sound in Washington State. The network covers cities with thriving shared micromobility services including Seattle, Redmond and Shoreline. With strong voter-approval, Sound Transit is in the process of planning and building an ambitious transit expansion.
Last month, Sound Transit recently opened the Crosslake Connection, extending light rail across a floating bridge (a world first!) across Lake Washington and introducing two new transit stations connecting Seattle and Bellevue. In partnership with the City of Seattle, King County, and Lime they made sure that shared micromobility parking was ready on day one. Leveraging learnings from their innovative Bike and Scoot to Transit pilot, they were able to rapidly put together signage, ground treatment (including stencils), and a software geofence to manage parking for shared bikes and scooters.
When asked about the value of NABSA membership, Sound Transit Transportation Planner, Simon Tan said, “It’s so valuable to have this forum and community of practitioners to share best practices in this rapidly evolving field. I’ve been able to learn about how other cities and agencies plan for free-floating shared micromobility devices and even received engineering specs from several. Let’s keep pushing the state of the art and sharing our learnings together!”
