NABSA joins Advocates from Across the US at National Bike Summit
Last week, NABSA’s Advocacy and Government Affairs Director, Shannon MacLeod, attended the League of American Bicyclists annual gathering, the National Bike Summit, to connect with allies across the broader bike movement and explore how shared micromobility and bike advocacy can better work together.
NABSA kicked off the Summit with DDOT representatives and Capitol Bikeshare staff for a group ride along a newly completed section the Metropolitan Branch Trail, one of DC’s most celebrated and recently expanded cycling corridors, and we stopped at Capital Bikeshare’s warehouse for a behind-the-scenes look at where CaBi’s fleet of over 8,000 bikes is assembled, maintained, and deployed daily.
The Summit also included a Lobby Day on Capitol Hill, where NABSA joined members of the Washington Area Bicyclist Association (WABA) and other partners to advocate for the continued investment in active transportation within the upcoming Surface Transportation Reauthorization.
NABSA participated in a panel along with participants of Better Bike Share Partnership’s Living Labs program from Tucson, Pittsburgh, Los Angeles, and Philadelphia. The session highlighted the ways that these cities and systems are expanding bikeshare access to historically underserved communities and neighborhoods, and how to strengthen the bike advocacy movement through engagement with shared micromobility riders.
Thank you to the League of American Bicyclists for bringing together such a wide range of voices from across the movement. Shared micromobility introduces people to cycling who might never have picked up a personal bike, and by including shared micromobility in the discussion at the National Bike Summit, we’re able to bring those riders, and operators, further into the bike advocacy movement.
