Member Spotlight: Shared Mobility Inc.

Based in Buffalo, New York, Shared Mobility Inc. (SMI) is a nonprofit dedicated to expanding equitable transportation through shared- and micro-mobility. Founded in 2009 as Buffalo CarShare, the organization works with communities, governments, and partners to develop affordable mobility options in small and mid-sized communities.

Reddy Bikeshare is a cornerstone of the organization’s work. The regional bikeshare program serves Buffalo, Niagara Falls, and surrounding communities. The program launched in 2016 in partnership with Independent Health and provides a growing fleet of bicycles—including electric-assist bikes—that connect neighborhoods, and offer residents and visitors an affordable, active transportation option. The program was built on an early pilot that introduced one of the United States’ first GPS-enabled bikeshare systems. It has now grown into one of Western New York’s most visible and widely used tools to get around.

SMI applies their operational experience to other systems as well. They manage CDPHP Cycle! on behalf of the Capital District Transportation Authority in Albany, New York, and have supported the development of several other small-scale bikeshare initiatives. Most recently, SMI helped launch Project MOVER, bringing bikeshare to communities in Westchester County, New York.

In addition to bikeshare, SMI has been an early leader in piloting community e-bike libraries, working with partners to refurbish and lend discarded electric bicycles so residents can experience e-biking without the upfront cost of ownership.

In 2025, SMI established New York State’s first two e-bike rebate programs, expanding access to e-bikes through direct purchase incentives. The Project MOVER E-Bike Incentive Program (EBIP) in Westchester County and the WNY E-BikeRebate program both provide financial assistance to income-eligible adults purchasing e-bikes at local bike shops.

When asked about the value of NABSA, SMI said that they joined to better explore challenges and solutions within the micromobility industry. “The SMI staff, based in Buffalo and Albany, highly values NABSA’s ability to convene industry professionals through both in-person and virtual gatherings. These opportunities have significantly contributed to the professional development and boosted the mission-driven morale at SMI.
