Shared Micromobility Ridership Sets New Record, NABSA’s Sixth Shared Micromobility Report Shows

Shared Micromobility ridership across North America reaches an all-time high for the second year in a row, demonstrating a firmly established, effective and resilient industry poised for continued growth.

  • Today, NABSA releases the sixth annual Shared Micromobility State of the Industry Report for North America – the only report of its kind tracking the trends, growth, and success of shared micromobility across North America.
  • Shared micromobility ridership in 2024 grew 31% reaching a new high with at least 225 million trips taken across North America in 2024.
  • 415 cities of all sizes across North America had one or more shared micromobility systems in 2024.
  • 74% of riders report using shared micromobility to connect to transit.
  • 66% of shared micromobility trips were on electric devices, and 79% of systems include e-devices.
  • Shared micromobility offset approximately 101 million pounds (46 million kg) of CO2 emissions by replacing auto trips across North America in 2024, and 403 million pounds (183 million kg) of CO2 emissions in the last five years.

August 7, 2025 – Today, the North American Bikeshare and Scootershare Association (NABSA), the nonprofit membership-based association representing public, private, and nonprofit organizations in shared micromobility, celebrates the release of the sixth annual Shared Micromobility State of the Industry Report for North America

The 2024 State of the Industry Report shows that shared micromobility ridership is thriving, showing that it is both a service that works for people to get where they need to go, and is also valued by communities of all sizes across North America. The total number of trips in 2024 increased 31% from that of 2023, which makes 2024 the second record-setting year in a row. At least 225 million trips were taken on shared micromobility in 2024. This report demonstrates with clarity how shared micromobility is an important mode in the public transportation ecosystem, and aligning public funding and policy support with its growing scale and success is key to sustainable operations.

In 2024, 415 cities across North America had one or more shared micromobility systems, and the total shared micromobility vehicles deployed across North America increased 19% from 2023 to 333,000.

“It’s amazing, but not surprising, to see how shared micromobility continues to grow and grow” said NABSA Executive Director Sam Herr. “It is so clearly providing meaningful service to get people where they need to go, and not just in big cities. Smaller and mid-sized cities, rural and suburban communities, are all implementing shared micromobility to provide mobility options, improve public transportation, and create community vibrancy.”

Seventy-four percent of riders say that they use shared micromobility to connect to transit, and 35% of shared micromobility trips reduce congestion by replacing car trips. Forty-six percent of systems offer adaptive vehicles. Data shows that people ride shared micromobility for all kinds of important trips– to get to work, run errands, social activities and dining out, and for recreation– all contributing to economic vitality in communities.

New this year, the report captures effective shared micromobility parking management strategies being deployed by agencies and operators, as well as a breakdown of public agency funding and staff time support for shared micromobility.

Electrification continues to be a major trend, both on the ridership side as well as operations. In 2024, 79% of shared micromobility systems included e-devices, and 66% of shared micromobility trips were taken on e-devices. E-bike trips reached an all-time high at 64 million trips, while e-scooter trips continued to rise reaching 85 million trips.

Shared micromobility continues to be a solution toward transportation decarbonization. In 2024, shared micromobility across North America offset approximately 101 million pounds (46 million kg) of CO₂ emissions by replacing car trips– 403 million lbs (183 million kg) of CO₂ emissions since 2019.

NABSA’s sixth annual Shared Micromobility State of the Industry Report shows the popularity, strength, and outsized impact of shared micromobility. “Shared micromobility is a sound and good investment for communities of all sizes. Aligning public funding and policy support with its growing scale and success is key to sustainable operations moving forward,” says Herr. “NABSA is currently working toward federal policy priorities in the US that would help to do this.”

Supporting shared micromobility is essential for its growth, success, and job creation. NABSA estimates that the shared micromobility industry employs at least 8,200 people across North America.

NABSA’s sixth report continues to confirm that shared micromobility contributes to community vibrancy and is an essential part of multi-modal mobility strategies that are necessary to get people where they need to go now and into the future.

NABSA worked with Toole Design and the University of California Berkeley Transportation Sustainability Research Center to help develop the report. The report is composed of survey results, statistics gathered from performance reports released by shared micromobility systems, and data from GBFS. In addition to the metrics shared above, more information about year-over-year trends, mode shift, benefits of shared micromobility, equity programs, trip and vehicle trends, system statistics by size, operating characteristics, shared micromobility and transit, and more can be found in the report.

Both an English and Spanish version of the report is available for download at nabsa.net/industry.

In addition to the annual Shared Micromobility State of the Industry Report, NABSA convenes an Annual Conference. The NABSA Annual Conference is the only shared micromobility-focused conference globally, and brings together shared mobility leaders, practitioners, operators, and equipment and technology providers to actively shape the future of shared micromobility. This year’s conference will be held October 15-17 in Montreal, Quebec. More information about the conference and registration can be found at nabsa.net/2025conference/.
