October Member Spotlight: Rebel Group
Founded 20 years ago in the Netherlands, Rebel Group is an employee-owned, non-hierarchical, and global company that advises, implements, and develops projects they believe in. They also do things like start cycling communities, raise bees on their roof, and make beer in their office.
Rebel’s global micromobility team has first-hand experience working in communities across four continents on micromobility operations, asset planning, business/financial modeling, contracting, policy, and system planning. Rebel advises their clients on how to build long-term, sustainable micromobility systems. They believe that this starts with well-considered RFP’s, contracts that align city and operator goals, experience-tested business models, and fostering trust and mutual investment in success between cities, operators, and community.
In 2023, Caltrans saw that micromobility systems across the state, in big cities and especially in small ones were struggling and asked Rebel to help. Rebel did an international market sounding to understand challenges for governments, operators, and communities which informed a set of resources they designed for Caltrans to help cities develop better business models, better concessions and regulations, and address common problems.
One thing they heard over and over was that insurance costs were too high, especially for small operators. They believed this could be a real industry threat and began researching creative solutions. They came up with the idea of a micromobility insurance consortium. This aims to allow dozens of small operators to work together, sharing risk and potentially lowering their insurance costs by 50%. “We received a lot of interest after our presentation at the NABSA Conference and are continuing to build on the idea. Fill out this survey if interested!”
When asked about the value of NABSA membership they said that Rebel is a deep believer in the value of NABSA as a convener of government, industry, and community. “Micromobility will never work without these key groups understanding each other, working together, and having a few beers together at the Annual Conference. In all our years of experience in different roles, we have seen NABSA take on so many critical issues, whether it was navigating the COVID crisis, weighing in on important legislation, developing key reports and research on the industry, or taking on critical issues like social and racial equity in mobility, NABSA has been there to help micromobility succeed long-term.”
