NABSA Hosts the 2023 Shared Micromobility State of the Industry Report Launch Event

On August 6th, NABSA released the 2023 Shared Micromobility State of the Industry Report at a virtual launch event. This event marked the fifth annual release of the Shared Micromobility State of the Industry Report for North America – the only report of its kind for shared micromobility in North America. NABSA and project partners Toole Design and UC Berkeley’s Transportation Sustainability Research Center gave event attendees a first look at key findings, trends, and insights in the 2023 Shared Micromobility State of the Industry Report for North America. The presentation shared about what’s new in the report, significant trends, and the methodology for its development.

Speakers:

  • Sam Herr, NABSA
  • Adrian Witte, PE – Toole Design
  • Elliot Martin, Ph.D. – UC Berkeley TSRC

Key take-aways from the event include:

  • At least 172 million shared micromobility trips were taken across North America in 2023, an all time high and a 10% increase from 2022.
  • In 2023 there were shared micromobility 280,000 vehicles in operation.
  • In 2023, 82% of shared micromobility systems included e-devices and 64% of shared micromobility trips were taken on e-devices. The number of systems with e-bikes grew 27% since 2022, and the number of systems with e-scooters remained relatively consistent.
  • By replacing short car trips and making new trips with shared micromobility, riders gained an additional 24 million hours of physical activity.
  • Shared micromobility offset approximately 81 million pounds (37 million kg) of CO₂ emissions by replacing auto trips
  • Shared micromobility helped more people to access transit, with 70% of riders stating that they use shared micromobility to connect to transit and 20% of all shared micromobility were to connect to transit.

Thank you to agencies and operators for contributing data to help build the report! We know that your time is valuable and the report is only possible because of your contribution. If you are an agency or operator of shared micromobility and are interested in contributing data to the report, you can do so by responding to the annual survey sent out in the early part of each year. If you have not received a survey in the past and feel as though you should, please contact hello@nabsa.net to request to be added to our outreach list.
