Member Spotlight: Grupo Expansión

Grupo Expansión is a multimedia company based in Mexico City. They are creators and distributors of content and advertising. Part of their mission is to contribute to improved methods of transportation that are healthier for users and more environmentally responsible for Mexico City, with hopes of expanding to other cities around the country and Latin America.

In 2022, Grupo Expansión, along with operations and logistics manager, BKT bici pública, began expanding and renewing Mexico City’s ECOBICI program. The goal is to grow the fleet from 6,500 to 9,300 bicycles, expand the system from 458 to 687 stations, and increase the geographical coverage from 3 to 6 municipalities. The relaunch of ECOBICI also integrates updates in the user experience with equipment developed and supported by Lyft.

The agreement with Mexico City has allowed Grupo Expansión to add a sponsor for the bicycles and the ability to place digital ad displays near the stations. This advertising-supported model has helped to support the system and lower membership fees.

ECOBICI has successfully integrated the bicycle as an essential part of Mexico City’s transportation system. It is a mode of transportation designed to satisfy the needs of inhabitants and tourists of Mexico’s capital city and one of the largest cities in the world. ECOBICI started operations in 2010 and was one of the first public bicycle systems in Latin America. ECOBICI is a gateway for Grupo Expansión into the micromobility industry and serves as a first step in their plans to contribute to methods of healthy and environmentally responsible transportation options in Latin America.
