Coming Soon: 2024 Report!
Revisiting the Last 5 years
NABSA is excited to release the 2024 Shared Micromobility State of the Industry Report for North America on Thursday August 7th at 2pm ET with our virtual launch event. This event will mark the sixth annual release of the Shared Micromobility State of the Industry Report for North America – the only report of its kind for shared micromobility. The annual State of the Industry report shares year-over-year metrics demonstrating the industry trends, growth, and success in shared micromobility for Canada, the US, and Mexico.
The inaugural 2020 report analyzed 2019 data, marking the first in-depth look at shared micromobility trends in North America. The second report covered 2020, highlighting the industry’s resilience during COVID-19, with trip and vehicle data, modeshift results, rider demographics, and economic impacts. The third report continued a look at shared micromobility during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021, and showed continued resilience and rebound. The fourth report noted a return to pre-pandemic trip levels and the growing interest in shared micromobility, showing its importance across North American cities of all sizes. The fifth annual report, which looked at 2023 data, tracked trends before, during, and after the COVID-19 pandemic and demonstrated shared micromobility’s continued viability and strength as an important mode in the public transportation ecosystem; It showed an industry that continues to grow, mature, electrify, and gain efficiencies and effectiveness.
The 2024 report continues to capture year-over-year metrics demonstrating the trends, growth, and success of shared micromobility in Canada, the US, and Mexico. Get ready for exciting things to come in the upcoming report! Want to learn more? Save the date and register for the launch event taking place on Thursday August 7th at 2pm ET. Until then, let’s review some of the trends from the first five State of the Industry reports.

Resilience and Growth
Shared micromobility usage was affected during the early onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, but the industry quickly rebounded and was within 20% of 2019 levels by the end of 2020. This positive trajectory continued into 2021. By 2022, trip-making returned to pre-pandemic levels in North America, and there was a rapid increase in the number of cities with shared micromobility. In 2023, shared micromobility ridership reached a new all time high with at least 172 million trips taken across North America.

Enhancing the Value of Other Transportation Modes
Shared micromobility doesn’t just create a new way to get around, it also makes all the other ways better. It makes travel by transit easier by getting people to and from transit stops to the places they need to be. In 2023 70% of riders reported that they use shared micromobility to connect to transit and 20% of all shared micromobility trips were for the purpose of connecting to transit. Shared micromobility improves commuting by car by allowing people to park once and continue to move around without more driving and parking in new locations. When drivers replace car trips altogether with shared micromobility, it reduces congestion.

Climate Impacts
Riding shared micromobility helps to decarbonize transportation by producing considerably fewer greenhouse gas emissions than driving a gas-powered car. Since 2019 shared micromobility trips in North America have offset approximately 303 million lbs of CO₂ emissions (137 million kg) by replacing car trips.

Electric Shared Micromobility
The popularity and use of electric shared micromobility continues to be popular year-over-year. Sixty-four percent of shared micromobility rides in 2023 were taken on an e-device, and 82% of systems across North America incorporate electric shared micromobility devices. E-bikeshare trips have continued to increase over time, from 7 million in 2019 to almost 40 million in 2023.
Looking Forward to the 2024 State of the Industry Report
The sixth annual Shared Micromobility State of the Industry Report for North America will be here August 7th! Metrics in the report include ridership and vehicle trends, information about transit integration, jobs counts, operating characteristics, GHG reduction, user demographics, and so much more! New additions to the 2024 State of the Industry report include shared micromobility parking management strategies being deployed by agencies and operators, a breakdown of public agency funding and staff time support for shared micromobility, and new research.
By capturing the benefits and impact of shared micromobility, the State of the Industry report is a powerful tool for advocating for shared micromobility and its benefits to communities. We can’t wait for you to join us for the 2024 report launch event!
