NABSA Fast Facts

  • In the spring of 2014, a handful of industry stakeholders came together and formed NABSA as a 501(c)3 nonprofit.
  • NABSA hired its first Executive Director in June, 2017.
  • NABSA has more than 70 members across the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and outside North America from Germany, the UK, Israel and China.
  • NABSA creates a space for the public, private and nonprofit sectors of bikeshare to convene and empower each other.
  • NABSA provides resources and support for the implementation of bikeshare systems that improve public health, quality of life, economic vitality, the local environment and the global climate.

Bikeshare Fast Facts

  • By 2016, North America had 50,000 bikeshare bikes, compared to 40,000 in 2014, and only 20,000 in 2012.
  • 28 million bikeshare trips were taken in 2016. This is a 25 percent increase in ridership from 2015.
  • As of 2017, more than 130 North American cities use bikeshare.
  • More than 12 North American cities have been piloting “dockless” bikeshare technology.
  • Bikeshare helps solve the “first and last mile problems” associated with bus and rail public transit — the ubiquitous situation in which the final destination for travelers is located a mile or two from a bus or rail station, hindering the usability of bus/rail transit for many people.
  • A 2015 study by Virginia Tech on Capital Bikeshare found that 16% of riders interviewed reported new spending due to their use of public bikeshare.
